Quaife penalised after stunning victory at Donington

04 May 2008

After enduring a tough qualifying session in which he finished a disappointed seventh, Quaife started the weekend respectably by finishing race 1 in sixth position.

In race 2 however, Quaife really showed his mettle right from the start. On a wet track, he forced his way into second position before the full caution yellow and the safety car made an entrance – an event that will come back to haunt him for some time. The 22 year-old driver showed his superb late-braking skills whilst harrying Tim Bridgman for the lead before finally overtaking with 12  minutes to go. Despite Bridgman’s best efforts, Quaife managed to stay in the lead on a quickly drying track until the chequered flag.

Unfortunately, after the race, the Clerk of the Course announced his decision to penalise Quaife by two seconds for overtaking under the yellow flag, dropping the Kentish driver to third. In typical style, Phil took it on the chin and is now looking forward to making amends at the next round at Thruxton.
